A Bachelor's Degree … Online at UIS?
Online bachelor degree completion programs at the
University of Illinois at
Springfield (UIS) are built on over 30 years of experience in assisting
students to pursue a wide range of careers as well as prepare for graduate
education. Students may complete the various curricula in the classroom,
entirely online via the Internet, or in combination. Both learning media
offer individualized instruction, advising, and support. The online
curricula enable students to complete coursework using the latest
computer-assisted technology for increased access to educational
resources, advisers, and materials. What are the Benefits of Online Programs? Online academic programs:
How Long Will it Take to Complete An Online Degree Program?
The length of time it will take to complete an online degree
depends upon many factors, such as: the discipline the student pursues,
the number of lower division (freshman/sophomore) hours s/he transfers to
UIS; the number of upper division hours (junior/senior) hours brought to
the specific program; the number of semester hours taken in any one
semester; and, results of participation in the prior learning assessment
program. To discuss academic planning and program completion, contact the
College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (CLAS) Online program at
800/323-9243.
How Can Academic Credit Be Earned Through the Online Degree Programs?
· Transfer up to 60 semester hours of lower division credit from a community college. · Transfer hours earned in upper division courses. · Supplement UIS coursework with courses from other regionally accredited colleges/universities. · Qualify to earn credit through the prior learning assessment process. Must Students Be "Computer Experts" to take online courses? Students must have some experience using a personal computer and navigating the Internet. As they begin an online course, an orientation session is held to provide an overview of the course and ways to access different components of the course. In the event that students encounter problems accessing the courseware, materials, or other course components, ongoing technical support is provided by the UIS Technical Support Center.
Are There Minimum Technology Requirements? At the UIS web site http://otel.uis.edu/ students should participate in the browser test; these results will ensure that their systems have these requisite technological tools and that they are working properly. The results screen at the end of the browser test will help to download needed software. The browser test assumes that hardware meets the requirements listed below. If the computer does not meet these requirements, it will not be able to pass the browser test. You must have the minimum requirements in order to participate in online courses. The minimum configurations are:
And if Students Don't Have Access to Their Own Computers? If students don't have access to a computer, they should obtain information about hours of operation for accessing computers and connecting to the Internet at one of the computer labs at Foothill College.
For Students Who Are Concerned About Their Computer Skills CSC 410B: Internet/Computer-based Research Tools and Techniques prepares students for online learning by assisting them to gain confidence using the Internet prior to applying to an online undergraduate program. What is the Tuition for CLAS Online Programs? Obtain information about UIS tuition and fee rates for the 2003 - 2004 academic year at the UIS website http://www.uis.edu/registration. Note that tuition and fees are accurately listed, but are subject to change without advance notice. Regular tuition and fees are assessed for courses taken under the audit grading option. UIS has implemented a special tuition rate that applies only to online courses. This rate is termed "electronic tuition," or simply "e-tuition." E-tuition is applied as follows: 1. All Illinois residents automatically qualify for the e-tuition rate. 2. An individual who is not a resident of Illinois, but who has applied and been admitted to an online degree program at UIS and who only takes online classes at UIS in a given semester, qualifies for the e-tuition rate. Non-residents of Illinois who do not meet the criteria identified in #2 above are charged out-of-state tuition rates when they enroll in online courses. For the Fall 2003 semester, the e-tuition rate is: Undergraduate: $115.00 per credit hour + $25.00 online learning fee per credit hour + $7.00 athletic fee = $147 per credit hour (or $588 for a four credit hour course) Graduate: $129.50 per credit hour + $25.00 online learning fee per credit hour + $7.00 athletic fee = $161 per credit hour (or $644 for a four credit hour course) If you have questions about qualifying for the new e-tuition rate, or for information about all aspects of tuition and fees, contact the UIS Registrar's Office at (217) 206-4UIS (4847), or Toll-free 1-888-977-4UIS (4847)
